Overview
After the devastating defeat and the subsequent breakthrough of the German army, France found itself under the harsh grip of German occupation. The country, once proud and free, was now subjugated, and the overwhelming sense of injustice stirred something deep within the hearts of the French people. As the occupation tightened, a spark of resistance ignited among a few brave intellectuals, leading to the birth of a movement determined to oppose the oppressors at any cost. These early seeds of the French Resistance began to take root, and over time, what was once a small and fragmented effort grew into a unified force committed to liberating the nation. The game immerses players in this asymmetrical struggle between the German occupying forces and the determined French Resistance. One player assumes the role of the occupying forces, either controlling them directly or utilizing an automa to simulate their actions. Meanwhile, the Resistance players each take charge of a specific maquis, a small yet determined group of fighters working tirelessly to weaken the enemy and ultimately free their homeland from occupation. In a tense, strategic cat-and-mouse dynamic, the Resistance fighters must complete daring missions and sabotage operations while the occupying forces set traps, patrol the streets, and attempt to capture the brave men and women fighting for freedom. The stakes are high, as every decision has consequences, and the Resistance must work together in secrecy and coordination to avoid detection and retaliation. The game unfolds over five main scenarios, each representing a significant moment in the history of the French Resistance, spanning from the early days of the occupation in 1940 to the liberation of Paris in 1944. Each scenario brings unique challenges and twists, forcing players to adapt their strategies and think creatively to overcome the obstacles placed before them. The scenarios are not only historical reenactments, but also dynamic challenges that require players to play differently depending on the context, ensuring that no two games are alike. Players have the option to tackle the game one scenario at a time or engage in a broader campaign, where the outcome of each scenario carries weight and influences the unfolding story. This campaign-style play provides a rich, evolving narrative that reflects the changing tides of the war, with each mission affecting the Resistance’s strength and resources in subsequent scenarios. The non-legacy format ensures that players can experience the full arc of the Resistance’s struggle without permanently altering the game’s components, allowing for replayability and exploration of various strategies.
